A Major UAE City Explores How to Transform Urban Travel
The Boring Company, known for its innovative tunnel solutions, is expanding its global footprint with a new agreement to explore underground transport and utility tunnels in Abu Dhabi. This exploratory phase, signed with the Abu Dhabi Projects and Infrastructure Centre, aims to assess the feasibility of advanced subterranean infrastructure. The move follows a significant $3 billion funding round led by UAE investors and aligns with the company's ambitious plans to scale up operations across the United Arab Emirates and domestically in cities like Nashville and Las Vegas, promising more efficient urban capacity.
The recent deal, inked at the Liveability and Investment Exhibition (LIVEX 2026), marks a significant step for Abu Dhabi in exploring modern solutions for urban development. The Boring Company will work with local authorities to study how underground networks could carry passengers or essential utilities, looking into everything from project delivery to operating models. While no construction commitments have been made yet, the goal is to see how these tunnels can help expand a city’s capacity more efficiently and make better use of existing space, potentially easing surface congestion.
This partnership isn't isolated; it comes on the heels of a massive $3 billion investment in The Boring Company, largely from UAE-affiliated sources, underscoring a shared vision for future urban infrastructure. This funding also included a commitment to build over 150 kilometers of tunnels across the UAE, separate from an existing pilot project in Dubai for a 6.4-kilometer loop.
Beyond the Middle East, The Boring Company is also rapidly advancing its projects back home. In Nashville, the "Music City Loop" is seeing a significant acceleration, with two specialized tunneling machines already at work and plans for a third and fourth to join them soon, as reported by NewsChannel 5. The company has made hundreds of improvements to its equipment and is actively planning over 40 stations, including connections to the international airport and major downtown hubs. Similarly, in Las Vegas, there are plans to double the number of operational stations by year-end, further cementing the company's commitment to transforming urban travel with efficient, underground pathways.
