AI Giants' Green Silence May Soon End [California Law]
Some of the world's most powerful artificial intelligence companies, including OpenAI and Anthropic, have remained silent about their greenhouse gas emissions despite their rapid growth. This lack of transparency leaves the public in the dark about the significant environmental impact of their energy-intensive operations. The massive data centers powering AI could soon generate as much climate pollution as entire countries. However, a new California law is set to change this, requiring these tech giants to disclose their carbon footprint and ushering in a new era of accountability for the sector.
In just a few years, AI startups have soared to immense valuations, becoming global powerhouses. Yet, unlike many established tech firms or even some fossil fuel companies, AI leaders like OpenAI and Anthropic have not disclosed their climate pollution or committed to net-zero goals. This silence is particularly concerning given the enormous energy demands of artificial intelligence.
The scale of AI's environmental impact is substantial. New gas-powered data centers, essential for running complex AI models, could generate as much climate pollution as an entire country, according to research from the Environmental Integrity Project. Experts like Ioannis Ioannou from the London Business School emphasize that these companies should absolutely be transparent about an environmental impact of a scale not seen before.
This lack of disclosure is set to change later this year. California's SB253 law, effective in November, will mandate that companies with over $1 billion in revenue operating in the state report their direct emissions and energy-related pollution. This applies even if their operations extend beyond California's borders. Both Anthropic and OpenAI are now preparing to comply, working with carbon accounting platforms and coordinating with their data center partners.
While there has been a recent shift in investor focus away from environmental, social, and governance (ESG) concerns in the U.S., the urgency of global warming remains. The rise of AI has coincided with a decline in investor pressure for sustainability, leading some companies like SpaceXAI to prioritize new gas plants for data centers without significant environmental disclosures. However, shareholders in Europe continue to demand transparency, and organizations like the Union of Concerned Scientists highlight the serious financial risks of climate change.
Measuring these emissions is complex, with no standardized method yet, as noted by Maura Hodge of KPMG. But the call for accountability is clear. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged the AI sector to fully disclose its energy, water, and land use, and to commit to renewable power, stating, “It is time to come clean.” This transparency is vital for consumers and businesses alike who wish to make sustainable choices when using AI technologies.
