When Darren Riley moved to southwest Detroit, he never expected an asthma diagnosis in his twenties. This personal health challenge revealed a deeper issue: his ZIP code suffered from some of Michigan's highest asthma rates, burdened by heavy air pollution from trucks, power plants, and industrial facilities burning fossil fuels. Driven by the belief that a ZIP code shouldn't dictate life expectancy, Riley created JustAir, a free online platform empowering communities with crucial air quality data to advocate for cleaner, healthier environments.

Living in a heavily industrialized part of southwest Detroit, Darren Riley experienced firsthand the severe impact of air pollution. The constant emissions from nearby oil refineries, factories, and heavy truck traffic that burn fossil fuels were not just an abstract environmental concern; they directly affected his health, leading to an adult asthma diagnosis.

This experience ignited a passion in Riley to expose the invisible threats his community faced. He firmly believes that where you live should not determine how long you live, especially when it comes to preventable environmental health disparities. To address this, he launched JustAir, an innovative online platform designed to make complex air quality information accessible to everyone.

JustAir gathers data from a variety of sources, including official government monitors and community-placed low-cost sensors, creating a comprehensive picture of local air quality. With over a thousand sensors nationwide and more than a hundred in the Detroit area alone, JustAir empowers residents with the knowledge they need to understand their environment and push for meaningful change. This initiative underscores the critical importance of reducing our reliance on fossil fuels and embracing sustainable solutions to protect both public health and our planet from the urgent threat of pollution.
