Last month marked a worrying milestone, matching July 2023 as the warmest month ever globally, with temperatures climbing to 1.65°C above levels seen before the Industrial Revolution. Data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service said Thursday shows this is the first time since November 2025 that global warming has pushed past the crucial 1.5°C mark.
This record heat wasn't confined to a single month; Western Europe just experienced its hottest summer on record, surpassing the previous high set in 2003. Our oceans are also showing clear signs of distress. Sea-surface temperatures across much of the globe have hit record levels for 100 straight days, according to an analysis by Climate Central. This streak includes a provisional all-time daily record of 70.2°F on August 23, exceeding a previous high from March 2024, using data from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said Bloomberg.
These alarming figures arrive shortly after a sobering United Nations report in early September, which warned that the planet is likely to soon exceed the 1.5°C global warming target agreed upon in the Paris accord. Current long-term warming stands at about 1.4°C, with even the most hopeful UN scenarios suggesting temperatures could peak at 1.8°C before any decline. Adding to this human-driven warming is a powerful El Niño event, providing a natural boost to global temperatures according to US forecasters.
As atmospheric scientist Zachary Labe from Climate Central puts it, “2026 is already shattering records for ocean heat, and this is only likely to continue into 2027 and well into the future if we do not reduce greenhouse gas emissions.” These records serve as a stark reminder of the urgent need for collective climate action and a rapid shift towards sustainable, cleaner energy solutions to protect our planet for generations to come.
