Beyond 1.5°C: What a Warming Earth Really Means for Us

The United Nations warns that current climate policies are pushing Earth beyond the critical 1.5 degrees Celsius warming target set by the Paris Agreement, potentially reaching 1.8 degrees. This comes as the world experiences record heatwaves, devastating floods, and widespread climate impacts. Climate scientist Michael Mann, in an interview on Living on Earth, likens this warming to a dangerous "fever" for our planet, emphasizing that serious consequences are already here. We must limit further warming to prevent catastrophic future scenarios. Mann, author of "Science Under Siege", makes clear that rapid decarbonization is essential for our collective future.

Climate scientist Michael Mann explains that while 1.5 degrees Celsius of warming might sound minor, it's like a serious fever for the Earth. Just as a fever causes illness, our planet's warming is already bringing dangerous climate change, seen in intense heatwaves, raging wildfires, and catastrophic floods worldwide. Even though we haven't yet reached the 1.5-degree mark, these impacts are profound, making it clear that dangerous climate change is no longer a future threat but a present reality we must urgently limit.

The human cost of this warming is stark. Extreme heat is a known killer, and deadly floods, like the glacial collapse in Tibet, are directly linked to human-caused planetary warming. When considering health issues from fossil fuel pollution, the climate crisis and our reliance on these fuels are proving more lethal than any pandemic experienced so far.

While global average temperatures are rising as climate models predicted, the actual impacts are proving to be much worse and happening sooner. From extreme weather events and disintegrating ice sheets to accelerating sea level rise, the consequences are outpacing earlier scientific forecasts. Despite this urgency, public concern for climate change often lags behind other potential threats, partly because its existential nature hasn't been adequately portrayed.

The good news is that we know what to do: surface warming stops almost immediately when carbon emissions are brought to zero. However, the bad news is that temperatures then stabilize at that elevated level indefinitely. This means the priority must be to "stop digging fossil fuels" and decarbonize our economies as quickly as possible. Failing to act could lead to over 3 degrees Celsius of warming, a catastrophic scenario where meeting the basic needs of billions of people on Earth becomes unimaginable. Our collective future depends on swift, decisive action to embrace sustainable, clean energy solutions.
