Beyond 1.5°C: Why the Climate Fight Has Entered a New Phase
A new report from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) warns that global warming is likely to exceed the critical 1.5°C threshold within years. This isn't a sign to give up, but rather calls for a new, urgent strategy: allow a temporary overshoot, reach the lowest possible peak temperature, and then actively bring global temperatures back down. This path demands much faster cuts in emissions, stronger climate resilience, and a significant boost in carbon dioxide removal technologies. The fight to protect our planet is intensifying, requiring unprecedented global action.
The 1.5°C target, set by the Paris Agreement, has long been a key goal to avoid the most severe climate impacts. However, current global efforts are not quick enough, meaning we are on track to temporarily pass this limit. Even with optimistic scenarios, warming could peak around 1.8°C, a difference that, while seemingly small, carries significant consequences for our planet and communities.
This temporary overshoot doesn't mean the climate fight is over. Instead, a new strategy involves quickly slowing warming, reaching a peak, and then actively reversing temperatures. This approach, outlined in UNEP’s Limiting Overshoot report, emphasizes that every fraction of a degree matters, as higher and prolonged warming increases risks to vital ecosystems, food systems, water supplies, and human health, particularly for vulnerable nations.
The longer temperatures stay high, the greater the risk of reaching dangerous tipping points for major climate systems, such as ice sheets and rainforests. These changes could have widespread effects on economies, food security, and water availability. UN Secretary-General Antőnio Guterres stressed that "This summer’s scorching heat, raging wildfires and deadly floods are a warning of what lies ahead. We must make the overshoot above 1.5 degrees as small and short as possible."
A crucial part of this new strategy is carbon dioxide removal (CDR), which involves pulling CO₂ directly from the atmosphere and storing it long-term. While essential, CDR is not a magic bullet; it must be deployed alongside, not instead of, drastic cuts in current emissions. The goal is to first reduce our output sharply, then use removal technologies to handle remaining emissions and eventually achieve net-negative emissions to cool the planet.
Alongside cutting emissions and removing carbon, strengthening adaptation efforts is equally vital. Even with a successful return below 1.5°C, communities will face permanent changes, requiring flexible and robust strategies to build resilience against extreme weather and environmental shifts. This includes nature-based solutions that can cool our environments while supporting local ecosystems.
The path forward demands immediate, collective action from governments and individuals. It's a race to keep the temperature peak as low and short as possible, ensuring a sustainable future. The decisions we make now will determine not just how high temperatures climb, but how long they stay there, and whether we can ultimately bring them back down for the health of our planet.
