Big Bear's Shadow: A New Partner Emerges After Loss?
Just weeks after the sad passing of his longtime mate Jackie, Big Bear's famous bald eagle, Shadow, has found a new companion. A raptor biologist confirms the new eagle, known as KD1 or Kaydee, is female and predicts a strong likelihood of them forming a pair bond and nesting by December. This natural turn of events is playing out on a beloved livestream, stirring a mix of emotions among dedicated fans who are both grieving Jackie and welcoming a new chapter for wildlife in the area.
The arrival of Kaydee at Shadow's nest, high in a Jeffrey pine overlooking Big Bear Lake, has captivated a global audience. Raptor biologist Pete Bloom, who has studied eagles for decades, is confident about the new pair. He helped identify Kaydee, noting her size and behavior, such as moving sticks in the nest and interacting with Shadow, as clear signs she is female.
Kaydee, a 4½-year-old eagle, was banded in April 2022 and hails from the Prado Basin, about 70 miles away. She first appeared on the Friends of Big Bear Valley's live cameras in mid-July, shortly before Jackie's condition deteriorated. Jackie, who was rescued in critical condition earlier, sadly passed away on August 9 after extensive efforts to save her.
Within hours of Jackie's death being announced, Kaydee was spotted at the nest Shadow had shared with Jackie since 2018. The interactions have continued, with the new duo perching together and even 'singing good mornings to the valley below,' as described by Friends of Big Bear Valley. The nonprofit has officially named her 'Kaydee,' recognizing her potential long-term presence.
Bloom explains that for birds of prey, a good territory is paramount, with a mate being secondary. This means an eagle with a prime nesting spot, like Shadow, will often stay put and attract new partners. While fans have mixed feelings, from joy at Shadow not being alone to lingering sadness for Jackie, this ongoing story highlights the resilience and cycles of life in the wild. As nature takes its course, the community watches closely, embracing both the grief and the renewed hope for this remarkable bald eagle family.
