Cybertruck's Hidden Strength Revealed by Top Safety Award

The Tesla Cybertruck has received the highest safety honor, the Top Safety Pick+, from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This makes it the only full-size pickup truck to earn this distinction in recent evaluations, highlighting Tesla's commitment to safety in its electric vehicles. The award applies to Cybertrucks built after April 2025, thanks to key structural upgrades. This achievement demonstrates how innovative design in electric vehicles can set new benchmarks for occupant protection, even as global regulatory differences present unique challenges.

The 2025-2026 Tesla Cybertruck crew cab pickup has been awarded the prestigious Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This significant recognition applies specifically to vehicles manufactured after April 2025, following important structural enhancements, including reinforcements to the front underbody and modifications to the footwell area. These upgrades were crucial in allowing the Cybertruck to perform exceptionally well in updated crash tests, earning "Good" ratings across various small overlap front, moderate overlap front, and side impact scenarios.

The Cybertruck also demonstrated excellent pedestrian protection, successfully avoiding all pedestrian collisions during daytime and nighttime tests. Its standard front crash prevention system received a "Good" rating in pedestrian scenarios, further underscoring its advanced safety features. This performance puts the Cybertruck in a class of its own; competitors like the Toyota Tundra only achieved a standard Top Safety Pick, while the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 did not qualify for either award.

Ironically, despite these top-tier U.S. safety credentials, the Cybertruck remains prohibited from public roads in the United Kingdom and much of Europe. Regulators in these regions have expressed concerns about the Cybertruck’s sharp external edges and its extremely rigid stainless-steel construction, arguing they fail to meet pedestrian-protection standards. European and UK rules prioritize rounded surfaces to minimize injury risk for vulnerable road users in the event of a collision.

Tesla’s unique engineering approach is central to the Cybertruck’s safety success. The vehicle features a distinctive exoskeleton made from ultra-hard 30X cold-rolled stainless steel, which creates an exceptionally rigid safety cage. This design is engineered to resist deformation during impacts while channeling crash forces away from occupants. Combined with Tesla’s advanced active safety systems, including automatic emergency braking, the Cybertruck offers robust protection. Its skateboard platform and low center of gravity also contribute to stability, reducing the likelihood of certain types of accidents.

The IIHS award highlights how the combination of high-strength materials, structural innovation, and advanced software in electric vehicles can deliver outstanding safety. As we move towards a more sustainable future with electrification, ensuring that new technologies also prioritize occupant and pedestrian safety is paramount, setting new benchmarks for vehicle design globally.
