An alarming energy crisis is unfolding in Eastern Europe as the mighty Danube River, a lifeline for many nations, shrinks to record low levels. Fueled by relentless droughts and severe heatwaves, this environmental emergency is a stark reminder of our changing climate. These extreme weather events are starving the river of water, jeopardizing the operations of vital power plants across the region.

Hungary is feeling the pinch acutely, with its only nuclear power plant, Paks, teetering on the edge of a complete shutdown. This plant relies on the Danube’s waters for cooling its reactors, and with the river levels critically low, its output has plummeted. Hungarian leaders have appealed for voluntary electricity savings and even made conservation mandatory for large businesses to keep the lights on during peak demand. This desperate situation shows how directly climate impacts can threaten basic services.

Neighboring countries are battling similar challenges. In Romania, authorities have used explosives to try and redirect water towards their Cernavoda nuclear plant, which is also operating at reduced capacity. Serbia's key hydroelectric plant is barely producing a fifth of its usual power. These widespread disruptions highlight how interconnected our natural systems are with our energy supply, and how vulnerable we become without a stable climate.
