France Blocks Tesla's FSD: Is Caution Costing Lives?

France recently declined to approve Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) Supervised system, sparking a strong reaction from Elon Musk. French Transport Minister Phillippe Tabarot cited safety concerns, despite acknowledging technological progress. Musk, however, argues that delaying this advanced system comes at a human cost, pointing to data suggesting FSD vehicles are significantly safer than average. This disagreement highlights a critical debate over how quickly advanced safety technologies should be adopted on European roads.

French Transport Minister Phillippe Tabarot voiced several concerns about Tesla's FSD system. He emphasized that it's not truly autonomous and that drivers remain fully responsible. Key issues raised included the system allowing speeding when surrounding traffic exceeds limits, and what he sees as inadequate guarantees for driver attention during tricky urban situations like lane changes and intersections. While France supports innovation, Tabarot stressed that road safety must always come first, and discussions with Tesla and other European partners are ongoing.

Elon Musk quickly challenged France’s decision, arguing that regulatory caution has a human price. Tesla’s latest safety reports show compelling data: vehicles using FSD Supervised recorded one major collision for every 5.1 million miles driven. This is dramatically better than the U.S. national average of one crash per 698,000 miles. Even regular Tesla vehicles with active safety features outperform the national average significantly. These figures come from billions of real-world miles, consistently showing FSD as a potential lifesaver.

Critics do point out that Tesla’s comparisons need careful review, but the data broadly supports FSD's safety benefits. With road accidents remaining a major cause of death globally, Musk believes that safer technology shouldn't be held back by lengthy bureaucratic processes. France's cautious approach mirrors a wider European trend, but as studies increasingly show autonomous systems are safer, pressure is growing for clearer, unified approval processes. Musk's warning suggests that every delay might mean more preventable tragedies on European roads.
