New research from the Galápagos Islands reveals a stark warning about our planet's changing climate. By examining both modern and ancient corals, scientists have found that global warming has intensified El Niño cycles over the past 40 years, pushing them beyond any natural variations seen in the last millennium. This escalation, linked to the burning of fossil fuels, makes these crucial weather events more extreme and costly than ever before. The findings underscore the urgent need for climate action, as stronger El Niños contribute to devastating global weather disruptions and accelerate planetary warming.

Scientists studying corals in the Galápagos Islands have made a significant discovery: global warming is causing El Niño events to become far more intense. Their study, published in Science, used both modern and fossil corals to trace sea surface temperatures over a thousand years. The data clearly shows that starting in the late 19th century, as humanity increased its reliance on fossil fuels, these powerful ocean cycles began to strengthen, surpassing natural fluctuations from previous eras. This means that human activity is amplifying one of the world's most critical drivers of extreme weather.

The consequences of these supercharged El Niños are severe and far-reaching. Strong events have historically led to widespread disruption, from deadly floods and disease outbreaks to devastating marine heatwaves that destroy coral reefs and coastal fisheries. They can also fuel intense droughts and wildfires, impacting communities and ecosystems across the globe. Experts note that such events have been both deadly and incredibly costly, with a 2023 study estimating trillions of dollars in economic losses from past strong El Niños. This current El Niño, already one of the strongest on record, is expected to further boost global temperatures, pushing them to new highs and highlighting the urgency of our climate crisis.

The research suggests a worrying trend: each major El Niño in recent decades has pushed the global average temperature to a new, higher baseline. While El Niño always brings warmer global temperatures, in the past they would typically return to pre-event levels. Now, however, temperatures remain elevated, signaling an acceleration of global warming. This escalation means more frequent and intense weather extremes, from severe flooding and droughts to devastating wildfires. These findings add to a growing body of evidence that climate change is already making powerful weather phenomena like El Niño even more destructive, impacting both natural systems and human societies worldwide.
