German climate activists Ende Gelände recently launched a powerful series of direct actions, marking their first major camp since 2022. Targeting critical gas infrastructure and power plant construction sites, they aim to disrupt the expansion of fossil fuels and push for a swift transition to sustainable solutions. These actions underscore the urgent need to move away from gas, which activists highlight as a source of environmental damage and global injustice. The group's renewed efforts also reflect a significant shift towards international solidarity, connecting local climate fights with broader struggles for justice. Their message is clear: the time for fossil fuels is over.

Ende Gelände, a prominent German climate action group, recently returned with a significant climate camp, orchestrating five impactful blockades across Germany. These actions targeted key players in the fossil fuel industry, from a pipeline manufacturer supplying gas infrastructure to companies building new gas-fired power plants. Activists successfully halted production at some sites and brought their message directly to construction zones, emphasizing that relying on gas is not a solution to climate change. This series of blockades highlights a renewed commitment to direct action against projects that prolong our dependence on fossil fuels.

The choice of targets was deliberate. While some coal power plants are being decommissioned, companies are replacing them with new gas-fired facilities. Activists argue this isn't progress, especially when considering the environmental damage caused by fracked gas and its impact on extraction communities worldwide. They brought solar panels to one site, symbolizing the cleaner, sustainable energy future we need, rather than a continued reliance on polluting sources. The message, displayed on banners, was stark: "exit gas now" and "Gas is violence," pointing to the global consequences of this fossil fuel.

This return to large-scale action also marks a significant evolution for Ende Gelände. After a period of regional focus, the group is re-engaging with a broader understanding of climate justice. This includes a notable shift towards international solidarity, exemplified by their strong pro-Palestinian stance at the camp. Organizers emphasized the importance of connecting local environmental struggles with global calls for justice, underscoring that climate action is intertwined with human rights and collective liberation. This holistic approach signals a deeper, more interconnected fight for a sustainable and just future.
