Preliminary data from Germany’s Federal Statistical Office reveals a tragic toll: over 5,000 excess deaths occurred during a fierce heat wave in late June. In the last full week of June, 5,486 more deaths were recorded than the average for previous years, coinciding with a national record temperature of 107.1 F. While an official estimate of heat-related deaths is still awaited from Germany’s Robert Koch Institute, the immediate impact of such extreme heat is tragically clear.
