Hawaii Faces New Storm Threat After Hurricane Lala

Tropical Storm Moke is now swirling past Hawaii, bringing the threat of heavy rain to communities still reeling from Hurricane Lala. Just last weekend, Lala caused widespread damage, leading to power outages, mudslides, and two reported deaths. With up to 15 inches of additional rain expected in some areas, residents are bracing for renewed life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially on the already impacted Big Island. This succession of severe weather events highlights the increasing vulnerability of island communities to intense storms.

As Tropical Storm Moke passes Hawaii, its main concern isn't strong winds, but the significant rainfall it's bringing. Forecasters predict the Big Island could see as much as 10 inches of rain, with isolated spots getting up to 15 inches. This could lead to dangerous flooding and mudslides, particularly in areas already weakened by Hurricane Lala.

Hurricane Lala, which hit last weekend, caused considerable damage across the islands. The northeast coast of the Big Island alone saw over 43 inches of rain, leading to downed trees, power lines, and damaged roads. Tragically, two deaths were also reported. Even now, thousands of customers, mostly on the Big Island, are still without electricity, according to poweroutage.us.

The back-to-back storms are creating immense tension for residents, who are urged to restock essential supplies and monitor the storm closely.
