To tackle this, Danish shipping company NORDEN and Microsoft have launched a pioneering "Book & Claim" system, a first for maritime transport verified by the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB). The verified emissions reductions from this fuel use are then passed on to customers like Microsoft. This innovative separation means companies don’t have to wait for sustainable fuel to be available on every single shipping route to start making a real difference.

For Microsoft, this pilot is a crucial step. The tech giant's emissions have been on the rise, particularly its Scope 3 emissions, which represent the vast majority of its overall carbon footprint, partly due to its expanding data centers, as detailed in its latest sustainability report. While shipping is a smaller piece, this model offers a direct, credible way to address these challenging supply chain emissions right now. It highlights how businesses can take concrete steps toward sustainability, even in sectors typically difficult to decarbonize.
