Tech giant Microsoft and engineering firm Aker Solutions have joined forces to tackle a pressing challenge in climate action: getting carbon removal projects built and operational. Many promising carbon capture and removal ideas struggle to secure funding and move past early stages. This new partnership aims to change that by providing the tools and expertise needed to make these projects financially attractive and ready for construction.

Aker Solutions brings its long history in engineering and project management, helping developers assess plans and manage risks. Microsoft complements this with its powerful digital technologies, artificial intelligence, data analysis, and understanding of carbon markets. Together, they plan to offer an integrated approach, guiding projects from initial studies all the way through to successful operation. This collaboration is crucial for speeding up the shift to cleaner technologies and ensuring that innovative solutions can actually make a difference for our planet.

This effort comes as Microsoft itself faces increasing carbon emissions, largely due to the rapid growth of its AI and cloud services. Despite matching 100% of its global electricity use with renewables, the company's total emissions recently grew by 25% in fiscal 2025. This rise highlights the urgent need for comprehensive solutions, including direct emissions reductions and effective carbon removal, to meet climate goals. Microsoft is committed to being carbon negative by 2030 and removing all its historical emissions by 2050.

The challenge is not just for Microsoft; the entire carbon removal industry faces a significant hurdle. A recent Carbon Direct report showed that a large portion of planned carbon removal supply for 2030 is at risk without more investment and commitments. Developers need long-term buyers to secure financing, and buyers need confidence that projects will actually deliver. Microsoft has been a leader in this space, contracting for 78.5% of disclosed durable carbon removal tonnes by April 2026, according to CDR.fyi. This partnership helps bridge the gap between these ambitious purchases and the actual construction of facilities.

By connecting all parts of the carbon management process—from initial concept to transport, storage, and verification—Microsoft and Aker Solutions aim to streamline development. This push is vital for our collective climate action, transforming bold promises into tangible, operational projects that actively remove carbon from our atmosphere.
