Microsoft Cuts Carbon Removal 80%: The Hidden Cost of AI?

Microsoft has sharply reduced its purchases of carbon removal credits this year, cutting them by about 80% compared to last year. This significant shift comes as the tech giant's overall emissions increased by 25% in fiscal 2025, largely driven by the massive energy demands of its expanding artificial intelligence (AI) business. This creates a challenging paradox for Microsoft, as it strives for rapid AI growth while still aiming to become carbon negative by 2030. The situation highlights a growing tension between technological advancement and urgent climate action.

New data from BloombergNEF reveals that Microsoft purchased only 8.55 million metric tons of carbon removal credits through mid-July 2026, a drastic 80% decrease from the previous year. This marks a potential reversal for a company that was previously a leading buyer, signing agreements for a record 45 million metric tons in fiscal 2025 alone.

The reduction happens as Microsoft's environmental footprint is expanding. According to its latest sustainability report, the company's total emissions jumped 25% in fiscal 2025. This increase is mainly due to the rapid growth of its data centers and the soaring electricity demand needed to power its AI initiatives. This demonstrates a critical challenge: while AI promises incredible innovation, its infrastructure demands a huge amount of energy, making climate goals harder to reach.

Despite this hurdle, Microsoft maintains its ambitious target to become carbon negative by 2030 and to remove all its historical emissions by 2050. A company spokesperson stated that any adjustments are part of a disciplined approach, not a change in their overall ambition. The company continues to invest heavily in clean energy, having matched 100% of its global electricity consumption with renewable energy in fiscal 2025 and contracting 34 GW of carbon-free electricity globally.

This shows that carbon removal is just one piece of a bigger puzzle. Microsoft's strategy also focuses on cutting emissions from its operations, expanding renewable energy supplies, and tackling emissions throughout its supply chain. The shift in its carbon removal purchases also reflects a wider trend in the market, which is becoming more selective, favoring projects that offer stronger, more verifiable climate impact.

The rapid expansion of AI poses a significant environmental challenge for the tech industry and the planet. Companies like Microsoft must balance innovation with a profound responsibility to reduce their carbon footprint. Achieving ambitious climate goals will require a combination of direct emission reductions, widespread adoption of clean electricity, and strategic, high-quality carbon removal efforts. The urgency of global warming means every decision about energy use and sustainability matters.
