Montana's Secret Weapon: Why Firefighters Are Igniting New Blazes

Two persistent wildfires in southwest Montana, the Bobcat Lakes and Sand Creek Fires, have prompted an unusual but critical firefighting strategy. Facing steep and dense terrains where direct intervention is too risky, crews are intentionally burning vegetation in a tactic known as strategic firing. This method removes fuel ahead of the main fire, creating safer control lines and protecting valuable property. It highlights the escalating challenges firefighters face in an era of longer fire seasons and heavier fuel loads, a clear sign of our changing climate.

In an effort to contain the Bobcat Lakes and Sand Creek Fires, firefighters in Montana are using a counter-intuitive method: intentionally setting small fires. This technique, called strategic firing or burnout operations, is deployed in areas where the terrain is too dangerous for crews to safely engage the main fire directly.

Firefighters work from established control lines, like roads or trails, and burn the vegetation between these lines and the approaching wildfire. This preemptive burning removes the fuel – such as dense timber and dead trees – before the main blaze can reach it. When the primary fire eventually arrives, it hits an area with nothing left to burn, effectively stopping its advance. This crucial strategy not only enhances firefighter safety but also helps protect homes and infrastructure in the fire's path.

The decision to conduct a strategic firing operation is not taken lightly. Fire managers carefully consider numerous factors, including the safety of personnel, the presence of threatened property, and environmental conditions. Experts, including incident meteorologists and fire behavior analysts, meticulously evaluate temperature, humidity, wind patterns, and the moisture content of fuels before any operation is approved and carried out. The U.S. Forest Service describes this as a key indirect firefighting tactic.

While the acreage burned during these controlled operations is included in the total wildfire size, it's a calculated risk to prevent much larger, uncontrolled destruction. This increased reliance on indirect tactics reflects a worrying trend: fire seasons are growing longer, and forests are holding heavier loads of dry fuel, conditions exacerbated by climate change. These factors make traditional direct attacks more challenging and underscore the urgent need for adaptive strategies to protect our natural environments and communities from intensifying wildfires.
