Elon Musk recently shared that a significant announcement is coming soon regarding the location of his ambitious Terafab project. This massive new factory is designed to produce the advanced AI chips needed for Tesla, SpaceX, and his other companies' major initiatives. Terafab was announced by Musk back in March and aims to create all the computing power required for projects like the Optimus humanoid robot and Tesla’s Full Self-Driving features, reducing reliance on outside suppliers.
The facility is expected to churn out over 1 terawatt of AI compute annually. Industry giant Intel has already partnered with the project, lending its expertise in chip manufacturing. Although unconfirmed, Business Insider has reported that Terafab might be located in Grimes County, Texas, though Musk clarified it won't be on the existing Giga Texas property due to its immense size.
Musk has underlined Terafab's critical importance, describing it as a "necessary" initiative without which the scaling of Optimus production would be severely limited. He has stated that Terafab is necessary for scaling Optimus, which he envisions as potentially the biggest product ever, and Terafab is key to providing the essential memory, logic, and packaging needed to make that vision a reality.
