However, Smithfield Foods refused to adopt these proven cleaner technologies. They claimed the solutions were "not economically feasible" to maintain competitiveness. Critics argue this narrow financial view ignored the huge public health and environmental costs, prioritizing short-term profits over community well-being. Despite generating billions in annual profits and paying millions in nuisance lawsuit settlements, the company maintained its polluting lagoons.
