A recent study published in the journal Science offers compelling evidence that global warming is amplifying El Niño's destructive power. Researchers analyzed temperature data from over 900 years of coral records from the Galápagos, finding that El Niños in recent decades are far stronger than any seen before the Industrial era.
Julia Cole, a lead author of the study and paleoclimatologist at the University of Michigan, noted that the swings between warm and cold conditions that define El Niño have been "much stronger in the last 40 to 50 years." Modern El Niños are about 36% more intense than they were before the mid-1800s, showing a striking 16% amplification in just the last 40 years. This aligns with warnings from the World Meteorological Society and the United Nations about the current, exceptionally strong El Niño.
El Niños are natural periods of warming in the tropical Pacific that occur every few years, triggering widespread changes like heat waves, floods, and droughts globally.
