The 2025 State of the Climate report, compiled by the American Meteorological Society and NOAA scientists, paints a stark picture of a warming world. In 2025, Earth’s oceans hit their highest temperatures yet for the third year in a row, while the Greenland Ice Sheet shed about 129 gigatons of ice – a staggering amount. Alarmingly, some northern regions, including forests and tundra, began releasing more carbon dioxide than they could absorb, further accelerating warming.
Scientists point to the continued burning of fossil fuels as the main driver behind these record-high greenhouse gas levels, which are intensifying extreme weather events worldwide. Europe, for example, has seen average temperatures rise significantly since the 1960s, with extreme heat waves becoming far more intense. The situation has become so critical that the International Court of Justice has warned that countries promoting fossil fuel use could be held legally responsible for climate damage.
Climate experts are sounding the alarm. These warming waters are also becoming more acidic and losing oxygen, posing severe threats to marine life. Michael Mann, director of the Penn Center for Science, Sustainability, and the Media, reiterated that the report clearly attributes these impacts to greenhouse gas emissions, countering ongoing climate disinformation. Scott Denning of Colorado State University added that every chapter in the report demonstrates the severe consequences of our reliance on carbon combustion.
