Plastic Plague: The Hidden Crisis in Guatemalan Villages

In the mountain villages of Guatemala, communities like El Duraznal are buried under a growing tide of plastic waste, leading to critical health and environmental issues. With limited waste management, many residents resort to burning plastic, unknowingly releasing harmful toxins into the air. This practice contributes to severe indoor air pollution, endangering women and children, and exacerbates local environmental degradation. A collaborative research project, Ecolectivos, is working with these communities to find sustainable solutions and highlight the urgent need for action against this pervasive plastic crisis.

Soila Elizabeth Cruz, an environmental health leader in El Duraznal, helps organize community cleanups to tackle the overwhelming plastic waste. She learned about the dangers of plastic from Ecolectivos, a project by U.S. and Guatemalan researchers studying how burning plastic affects health in the Santa María Xalapán mountains.

The global plastic crisis, driven by a surge in petroleum-based materials, has seen billions of tons produced annually for decades. Despite promotions, only about 9 percent of plastic has ever been recycled. This failure is particularly acute in Guatemala, which lacks sufficient waste management infrastructure while importing increasing amounts of plastic goods. United Nations trade data shows Guatemala imported over 1.2 million tons of household plastic goods over the past decade.

Plastic pollution chokes rivers and landscapes, making Guatemala one of Latin America's worst pollution hotspots, according to a recent study. With over half the population living in poverty, many rural households lack waste collection. Nearly three-quarters of countryside homes burn their waste, including plastic.

Burning plastic releases a dangerous mix of microplastics, carcinogens, and other toxic chemicals that harm health and contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. A 2023 study by Ecolectivos researchers suggests that this burning could significantly increase emissions. The smoke can irritate eyes, burn throats, and cause headaches, as Soila Elizabeth Cruz experienced before participating in workshops.

Ecolectivos, a collaboration involving the University of California, San Francisco, Emory University, and Universidad del Valle de Guatemala, aims to empower communities to reduce plastic burning. They conduct studies using special air monitors and urine samples to track exposure to plastic combustion by-products. Their workshops encourage practical solutions, like community cleanups and using reusable bags, promoting a healthier environment.

However, field workers note the challenges: "Everything they get comes in plastic, and if they want to change that, it’s more expensive," said Abdías Misael Ramírez Méndez. Many villagers, like Sandra Mungiya Marcos, must burn waste because they lack alternatives. When plastic is added to cooking fires, breathing problems for children worsen, highlighting the urgent need for accessible and affordable clean solutions.

Future plans include experimenting with electric induction stoves in a local kitchen to see if they can meet cooking needs, potentially eliminating combustion emissions. This could be a significant step towards cleaner air, though challenges like unreliable power grids and traditional cooking methods remain. The ongoing effort demonstrates the power of local communities, supported by research and awareness, to drive environmental action and improve public health against the backdrop of a global plastic crisis.
