The storm underscores the increasing vulnerability of coastal regions to extreme weather.

Tropical Storm Lala is rapidly approaching Hawaii's Big Island, with experts predicting it will become a hurricane before making a rare direct hit. This could be the first hurricane to strike the island since a Category 3 storm in 1871, according to historical research, making its potential impact significant and unprecedented in modern times.

The storm is expected to unleash 8 to 12 inches of rain across Maui and the Big Island, with some areas on the Big Island seeing up to 25 inches.
