Across the Southern Plains, Lower Mississippi Valley, and into the Southwest, temperatures are consistently hitting triple digits and beyond, with some areas like Arizona and New Mexico potentially breaking records by reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit or more. What makes this heat wave particularly concerning is not just the daytime highs, but also the lack of cooling overnight, which significantly elevates the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Scientists are increasingly precise in connecting extreme weather events like this heat wave to climate change, even quantifying its impact. Research shows that human-caused climate change has increased the temperature of typical U.S. heat waves by 3 to 5 degrees Fahrenheit. Trustworthy sources like the National Climate Assessment and the World Weather Attribution network confirm that burning fossil fuels is fueling longer, more intense, and more frequent heat waves globally. In fact, the average number of heat waves in the U.S. has doubled since the 1980s, making many of the most intense events we now see virtually impossible without human influence.

Understanding the "heat index" is crucial during these times; it represents what the temperature truly feels like when humidity is factored in. This "feels like" temperature can push parts of Texas, Louisiana, Florida, and southern Arizona into the dangerous 105-115 degree range this week.
