He recalled an unprecedented amount of sweat and sharp chest pain. Doctors later found blockages in his heart arteries, believing years of intense heat had strained his cardiovascular system. His story is a stark reminder that heat can harm our health in ways we might not expect, beyond immediate heatstroke.
Scientists are now probing whether global warming is making this condition worse for people everywhere. Unlike the body's helpful acute inflammation for fighting infection, chronic inflammation is a prolonged immune response that can damage healthy tissues, leading to conditions like arthritis, diabetes, stroke, and significantly, heart disease. Environmental epidemiologist Daniel Riggs notes that thinking heat is only dangerous during heat waves might be too narrow, as routine exposure to elevated temperatures can subtly affect our immune systems and blood vessels.
Research from places like Louisville, Kentucky, has shown that hotter conditions are linked to higher levels of immune cells and inflammatory molecules in blood samples linked. For farmers like Sadashiv Yadav and Vilas Kamble, avoiding heat is a daily challenge, forcing them to adjust work schedules and routines. Kamble, who had bypass surgery after developing blockages linked to hypertension, now avoids the hottest parts of the day.
