Tesla Drivers Get a New Way Out When Charging – But There's a Catch
Tesla has introduced a significant new safety feature for its Supercharger network called 'Emergency Drive Away.' This allows drivers to quickly leave a charging stall, even if the cable is still connected, in urgent situations. While this capability offers a crucial escape route, Tesla warns that using it will damage both the vehicle and the Supercharger. The move comes as a direct response to growing concerns about driver safety at public charging locations, highlighting an evolving need for secure and accessible electric vehicle infrastructure as we transition to a cleaner energy future.
Before this update, a Tesla vehicle would remain locked in Park whenever a charging cable was plugged in. Drivers had to manually release the cable via the car's touchscreen, the Tesla app, or a button on the charger handle before moving. The new Emergency Drive Away feature bypasses this lockout, enabling immediate movement, as Tesla's charging team announced on X.
However, Tesla is very clear about the implications: activating this feature will cause harm to both your vehicle and the Supercharger equipment. It’s strictly intended for genuine emergencies, with warnings inside the car explicitly stating the damage and even mentioning that short camera recordings will be shared with Tesla to distinguish between real emergencies and misuse.
This development isn't just a technical upgrade; it's a response to serious safety concerns that have emerged at public charging sites. Tragically, there have been incidents of violence, including a fatal shooting at a station near Denver in 2023 and a shooting incident in Twin Falls, Idaho, on August 1. Such events underscore the critical importance of ensuring safety within the infrastructure supporting our shift towards electric vehicles, which are vital for reducing carbon emissions and combating climate change. As more people embrace sustainable transportation, the reliability and safety of charging networks become ever more paramount.
