Tesla has introduced a new 'quiet mode' for its Robotaxis, a feature that blacks out the passenger screen to promote rest. First seen in the Cybercab, this mode is now active in Model Y Robotaxis, including those operating in Dallas. It reflects a long-held vision by Elon Musk for truly autonomous vehicles where passengers can sleep comfortably en route. As electric Robotaxis become a tangible reality, they represent a significant step towards more sustainable urban transportation, reducing the need for individual car ownership and lessening overall emissions.

A new 'quiet mode' feature has been spotted in Tesla's Model Y Robotaxis, allowing passengers to enjoy a peaceful, screen-free ride. When activated, tapping a small moon icon clears the map and other displays, leaving only essential information like destination and prompt to exit the mode. Important controls for passengers, such as cabin temperature and support, remain accessible. This enhancement builds on earlier efforts to reduce cabin noise, including quieter turn signals, as reported by Spencer.

This tranquil experience aligns with Elon Musk's decade-long ambition for self-driving cars. As early as 2014, Musk spoke of a future where passengers could "get in the car, go to sleep and wake up at your destination." He later emphasized at TED that true autonomy meant a level of safety so high you could comfortably fall asleep. This vision was reiterated during the Cybercab unveiling in 2024 and confirmed in 2025, with Musk calling the ability to sleep in the car the "acid test" for unsupervised Full Self-Driving.

Today, with driverless Model Y rides running in Dallas and Houston since April, the quiet mode makes that relaxed journey a reality for passengers. Tesla is even offering a free first trip for new riders, making it easier for more people to experience autonomous travel. As the Cybercab launch in Dallas approaches next month, these advancements underscore the ongoing shift towards electrification and sustainable transport solutions, promising a cleaner, more convenient future for city dwellers. This vision aligns perfectly with the growing global push for electrification and smart, sustainable solutions that benefit both commuters and the planet.
