Tesla’s Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg has been awarded the European Ecolabel (EMAS), recognizing its progress in sustainability. The certification highlights extensive reforestation, reduced water use, solar expansion, and energy efficiency improvements. Officials describe Tesla’s factory as a model for how advanced industry and ambitious climate goals can work hand in hand.

Tesla has received the EMAS (Eco-Management and Audit Scheme) certification for its Gigafactory Berlin-Brandenburg, making it one of over 40 companies in Brandenburg to carry the EU’s highest environmental management recognition. The seal acknowledges Tesla’s existing initiatives and commitment to further improve its sustainability performance.

Plant manager André Thierig emphasized the scope of Tesla’s reforestation program, with more than 2 million trees planted to compensate for cleared land, alongside upcoming plans to expand solar power generation by 5 to 15 MW this year. “We will continue to promote photovoltaics in the future,” he noted.

The factory is also focused on resource efficiency. In 2024, Giga Berlin consumed about 419,503 MWh of energy, most of it electricity, while pursuing ways to cut natural gas usage by repurposing waste heat. Water use has been reduced to 2.16 cubic meters per vehicle, well below the industry average of 3.5, and Tesla is targeting 90% recycling of process wastewater this year.

With 11,000 employees producing around 250,000 vehicles annually, Giga Berlin is not only a cornerstone of Tesla’s European operations but also a symbol of integrating large-scale manufacturing with environmental responsibility. Brandenburg’s Environment Minister praised Tesla as a “role model”, highlighting how its transparent reporting and measurable results demonstrate that industrial growth can advance alongside ambitious climate action.
