Washington Island's Art Piece Reveals a Future That's Closer Than You Think

A Washington state community is taking an innovative approach to confront the future impacts of climate change, not with statistics, but with art. Bainbridge Island, nestled in Puget Sound, is already grappling with the increasing threat of flooding from very high tides, known as king tides, a problem set to worsen as global sea levels continue to rise.
Inspired by a local scientist, Lara Hansen of the nonprofit EcoAdapt, the island has installed a thought-provoking art piece designed to make these future changes feel more real. Hansen calls it a "reverse time capsule," intended to show the present what the future might look like, rather than preserving the past.
The installation features a simple stone bench by the water. When people sit, their feet rest at the current king tide mark, while the seat itself is positioned about 18 inches higher – representing the sea level expected by midcentury under the most extreme projections. Beside the bench, a five-foot-high stone pillar dramatically marks a potential worst-case scenario for sea level rise by the end of the century.
The hope is that this artwork will connect with people in a way that scientific reports often cannot, encouraging them to consider the risks and take action.
