A new report from the Carbon Drawdown Initiative sheds light on the surprisingly small yet impactful workforce dedicated to removing carbon dioxide from our atmosphere. Their portfolio alone has employed nearly a thousand people and successfully removed over 800,000 tonnes of CO2. This effort represents a significant step towards global climate goals, with more than half of these companies already delivering verified carbon removal. As the planet faces increasingly urgent climate challenges, this burgeoning industry plays a vital role in building a sustainable future.

The Carbon Drawdown Initiative's recent survey reveals tangible progress in the critical fight against climate change. Their supported companies, employing 961 people, successfully removed 806,000 tonnes of CO2 by the end of 2025. Impressively, 55% of these companies have already issued verified certificates for the carbon they’ve removed, demonstrating real, measurable impact.

To put this in perspective, this portfolio alone accounted for about 5% of the estimated global carbon dioxide removal (CDR) in 2025. Yet, the entire global pure-play CDR workforce, according to Captain Drawdown, stands at a mere 10,000 to 25,000 people. This is a stark contrast to the millions employed in the wind and solar energy sectors, highlighting just how nascent this crucial industry is, even as it tackles one of humanity's greatest environmental challenges.

Despite its small size, the CDR industry is highly impactful. Major players like Microsoft are driving demand, contracting with many suppliers and significantly contributing to the sector's growth. According to cdr.fyi, Microsoft’s purchases alone accounted for 78.5% of all publicly disclosed durable CDR tonnes as of April 2026. This concentration means individual investors and companies can profoundly shape the industry's direction, accelerating the development of essential climate solutions.

While this small scale presents risks, making the sector vulnerable to market shifts, it also offers a unique opportunity. Early actions and investments have an outsized impact, helping to define the future of carbon removal. The progress made—nearly a thousand people, significant CO2 removal, and verified results—shows that this isn't just theory; it's a rapidly developing, working solution for a healthier planet.
