New research from Oregon State and Portland State Universities reveals alarming levels of lead contamination near Hillsboro and Troutdale airports. This lead, traced back to fuel used by small aircraft, poses significant health risks, especially for children, where even low levels can cause irreversible cognitive decline. The findings highlight a critical environmental and public health concern that impacts communities surrounding thousands of small airports across the nation, underscoring the urgent need for cleaner aviation solutions.

Health experts agree that no amount of lead exposure is safe for humans, with children being particularly vulnerable to its detrimental effects on cognitive development. Despite this, many small airplanes and helicopters nationwide continue to burn leaded aviation fuel, releasing harmful particulates into the air that can settle in soil and be inhaled.

Researchers found lead levels around the Hillsboro and Troutdale airports in Portland, Oregon, to be about seven times higher than in other urban areas. These levels were directly linked to emissions from single-piston engine aircraft. This local issue reflects a widespread national problem, impacting communities near approximately 19,000 small airports.

A study published in Nature Communications Sustainability confirms that children living near such airports often have higher blood lead levels that cannot be explained by other sources. Lead in soil is particularly concerning as it does not naturally disappear and can be tracked into homes, posing a continuous exposure risk.

While the first unleaded aviation fuel for these aircraft was approved in 2022, its adoption has been slow. There is currently no federal ban on leaded fuel, despite the Environmental Protection Agency having ruled in 2023 that it endangers public health. However, the Federal Aviation Administration aims to phase out leaded aviation fuel by 2030.

Community efforts are pushing for faster action. The Hillsboro City Council has urged the Port of Portland to accelerate the transition to unleaded fuel. While local airport bans, like those in Santa Clara County, California, are a step forward, a broader federal mandate for cleaner, sustainable aviation solutions is essential to fully protect communities.
