For years, damp basements have been a fact of life for many in Pittsburgh. The city's unique geography, with its steep hills and tightly packed clay soils, means that heavy rains often lead to water collecting around home foundations, seeping into lower levels. This challenge is growing more severe as global warming intensifies, bringing more frequent and intense downpours that overwhelm natural drainage.

Recent studies, including work by Linnea Warren May of Rand and Jemima Ohwobete from the University of Pittsburgh, reveal just how pervasive this issue is. Their research found that roughly three-quarters of homes surveyed in certain Pittsburgh neighborhoods had experienced basement wetness, often as a constant dampness rather than major floods. This isn't just about property damage; it's a serious public health concern.

That persistent moisture becomes a breeding ground for mold and other unhealthy microbes. As Ohwobete explains, these airborne particles can trigger asthma attacks, allergic reactions, and skin rashes. Understanding what's in our indoor environments and how to protect vulnerable individuals is crucial. Addressing these issues not only improves individual health but also highlights the urgent need for communities to adapt to and mitigate the impacts of a changing climate.
