Breakthrough research from Cal State Long Beach's Shark Lab shows that great white sharks actually detect swimmers and surfers through sound and vibration, often from as far as 100 feet away. They systematically ruled out sight (due to limited underwater visibility) and smell (which disperses too slowly) as the initial trigger for a shark's approach from a distance.
Instead, the team focused on sound and vibrations, which travel effectively underwater. Sharks possess highly sensitive inner ears, equipped with specialized cells that allow them to pinpoint the direction of sounds. To test this, scientists conducted a unique 'hearing test' for sharks, recording sounds from common human water activities: freestyle swimming, kayaking, and surfboard paddling. They then played these sound clips underwater and observed shark behavior.
Preliminary results are striking: sharks can clearly distinguish between the sounds of these activities. They found that the louder, more erratic sounds of freestyle swimming—which happen to mimic a struggling fish—were more likely to draw a shark's curious approach. In contrast, the more consistent sounds of a surfboard paddling were often dismissed as background noise, and the gentle sounds of kayaking elicited very little reaction. This means sharks often recognize from our splashing that we're not their usual meal.
This ongoing study is the first to empirically demonstrate that sharks use sound to cue into people from afar. Whitney Jones, who designed the study, emphasizes that while juvenile white sharks seem to habituate to humans around them, this research provides solid evidence.
