Your Old Tesla Could Become This [Custom EV]
A Wisconsin startup, Hoffman EV, is pioneering a unique approach to sustainable transportation by transforming used Tesla Model 3 and Model Y vehicles into custom pickup trucks and 11-seat buses. Their creation, the Hoffman Badger, debuted at SEMA, showcasing how existing electric vehicle components can be repurposed for new, specialized uses. This innovative strategy not only offers new vehicle options but also champions the environmental benefits of extending an EV's lifecycle and utilizing recycled materials in production, marking a step forward in resource-efficient mobility.
The Hoffman Badger is more than just a custom vehicle; it's a testament to creative reuse in the automotive world. This new offering takes all the essential hardware and software from donor Tesla Model 3 or Model Y cars—including the motors, dashboard, and even the ability to use Tesla’s Superchargers and assisted driving features—and integrates them into a brand-new, robust chassis. This smart repurposing gives existing electric vehicle technology a fresh start, making the most out of valuable resources already in circulation.
Designed with versatility in mind, the Badger features powder-coated aluminum body parts and stainless steel fasteners, with most new materials being recycled. The innovative design allows for removable doors, roof, and seats, transforming it into anything from an 11-seat bus to a practical pickup. This commitment to sustainable manufacturing, alongside the extension of an EV's operational life, highlights a crucial pathway towards a more circular economy and reduced waste in vehicle production. As founder Geoffrey Hoffman shared in an Out of Spec Review video, the company is still refining its plans based on public interest.
Expected to hit the market next year, the Badger’s pricing is anticipated to range from around $26,400 to $77,000, depending on customization. Customers will have the option to purchase a ready-made vehicle or a kit, allowing them to source a donor Tesla themselves. This flexibility, coupled with the environmental advantage of giving electric vehicles a longer, more diverse life, underscores the importance of embracing sustainable solutions and electrification for a greener future. Beyond the Badger, Hoffman EV also specializes in converting classic cars, such as Land Rovers and Bentleys, into modern electric drives, further cementing their dedication to cleaner, electrified transport.
