The research, published in the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, explored how carbon labels on food products and carbon taxes could influence consumer choices. In a simulated online supermarket environment involving 5,000 UK respondents, scientists found that simply showing the carbon footprint of food led to a 5.6 percent reduction in the carbon content of an average shopping basket.
Combining these clear labels with a modest tax on the most carbon-intensive items proved even more effective. This dual approach could reduce the carbon footprint of shopping by about 10 percent, which translates to nearly 5 percent of the UK’s total greenhouse gas emissions. Crucially, the study also found that redistributing the tax revenues back to people could make the policy fairer, addressing concerns about how such taxes might affect less-wealthy households.
These findings suggest a path forward where environmental action is not only impactful but also equitable. By making informed choices at the grocery store, guided by transparent information, we can collectively push towards a more sustainable future and significantly slow the pace of global warming.
